OpenVMS Training Overview

This course presents to the OpenVMS computer professional (user, system manager, application/system programmer) the techniques needed to develop advanced DCL command procedures. The course also teaches advanced capabilities in OpenVMS utilities.

OpenVMS Training Prerequisites

This is an advanced OpenVMS course. It is assumed that participants either have attended the basic Getting Started course, or have equivalent system time and experience.

OpenVMS Training Course duration

This course normally requires two (2) days, approximately 50 % lecture, and 50 % lab time

OpenVMS Training Course Objectives

Each participant will be able to use DCL (Digital Command Language) commands to maintain collections of files, use advanced features in the OpenVMS editor EVE, control usage of command procedures, communicate with other users, and tailor the interactive environment to meet their needs, using advanced procedures and techniques.

Advanced Techniques in Command Procedures

    Redirection of I/O in Command Procedures
    Symbol usage and substitution
    Using lexical functions
    Calling other procedures and subroutines
    Nesting procedures and conditionals
    Error handling
    Control/Y handling
    File and record I/O in procedures
    Using escape sequences
    Accessing OpenVMS executive data areas

Using the OpenVMS Batch Facilities

    The SUBMIT command and qualifiers
    Submitting restartable batch jobs
