Overview

Students will learn about some of the advanced features available for the Windows 2000 operating system.

Prerequisites

Windows 2000: Introduction or equivalent knowledge.

Target Student
Students enrolling in this course should understand the Windows 2000 domain environment, Windows 2000 techniques, and applications. Performance-Based Objectives Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • *??????????? Customize the Windows 2000 desktop by modifying the Start menu, taskbar and default desktop view.
  • *???? Manage files by viewing file attributes, securing files and folders, and identifying file associations.
  • *??????????? Optimize system performance by using the following tools: compression, backup and restore, Disk Cleanup, the Task Scheduler, and the Task Manager.
  • *???? Set printer options and manage the print queue and troubleshoot technical problems.
  • *???? Use other Windows 2000 applications, including Disk Defragmenter, the Run command, the Command Prompt, accessibility options, and other Accessories.

Hardware/software Requirements

To run this course, you will need one computer running Windows 2000 Server (or Advanced Server) to act as an Active Directory domain controller for your classroom. You?ll also need one computer running Windows 2000 Professional for each student and for the instructor. Each computer will need:

  • ????? For the Windows 2000 Professional computers: at least 32 megabytes (MB) of Random Access Memory (RAM) (64 MB recommended). For the Windows 2000 Server (or Advanced Server) computer: at least 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended).
  • ????? A 2 GB hard disk with at least 650 MB of free space for Professional and 1 GB of free hard-disk space for Server.
  • ????? A Pentium processor, 133 MHz or faster.
  • ????? A VGA or higher resolution video card and monitor.
  • ????? A mouse or compatible tracking device.
  • ????? A 3.5? 1.44 MB floppy-disk drive.
  • ????? A 12X or faster CD-ROM drive if you will be installing Windows 2000 from a CD-ROM. You can also install from a shared network installation location. Note: If the CD-ROM drive is not bootable, or if you will be installing from the network, you will need to run the Makeboot.bat batch file from the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM to create setup boot floppies to initiate Windows 2000 Setup.
  • ????? A network adapter and network cable, with a classroom connection to the Internet. All classroom computers should be on the same physical network segment.
  • ????? Licensed copies of the Windows 2000 Professional software for the instructor and student computers, and Windows 2000 Server (or Advanced Server) for the classroom domain controller.
