Overview

This powerful and practical intensive two-day workshop is designed to provide participants with enhanced knowledge, tools and skills for managing projects. Designed for maximizing productivity through the use of Microsoft Project, Word and Excel applications, this workshop uses a case study to demonstrate the effective management of a project. Students will leave the workshop with a series of custom-built templates ready to use on their next project.

Course Objectives

On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate:

Ability to create team commitment through the designing of a 'Project Charter' • Effective and accurate scheduling in Microsoft Project (v2000), incorporating constraints and critical milestones • A fundamental understanding of Resource Scheduling and Management in Microsoft Project (v2000) • Identifying over-allocated resources and performing leveling functions • Enhanced estimating ability for commercial bids and internal estimates using automated Microsoft Excel Templates • Comprehensive risk management planning proficiency • Ability to establish and maintain tight control over projects • Baselining the plan in Microsoft Project (v2000) and performing tracking functions for accurate status reporting • Disciplines in realigning your project to meet critical milestones • Effective Control over the inevitable element of change and ongoing management of this process • A comprehensive understanding of the variety of customized Project progress reporting capabilities in Microsoft Project (v2000)

  • Creating a Microsoft Project schedule, including dependencies, critical milestones and constraints • Resource Management - effective techniques for assigning resources, establishing accountability and troubleshooting over allocations • Producing sophisticated estimates and bids using automated Microsoft Excel Templates • Creating a comprehensive risk management strategy and plan • Controlling the project - Baselining the plan in Microsoft Project (v2000), and performing tracking/update functions for 'up to the minute' status reporting • Performing Earned Value reporting • Effective management of the Change Control process • Generating customised progress reports through Microsoft Project (v2000), incorporating custom designed tables and filters
Prerequisites

Participants should either be currently working in a project environment, or planning to do so in the near future. In addition, students should have the following experience:
  • Successful completion of G703eng Project Management Fundamentals or similar practical experience
  • Basic Windows user skills. Basic skills in Microsoft Project, Word and Excel (any version) applications would be advantageous but are not essential.
