Overview

Students will learn how to use the basic database features in Notes 5.0.

Prerequisites

Windows 95: Introduction, Windows 98: Making the Transition, or Windows NT Workstation 4.0: Orientation, or equivalent knowledge.

Target Student

Students enrolling in this course should understand the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer (PC). Students should also be familiar with Windows and with using a mouse.

What's next

Notes 5.0: Database Features focuses on database functions. Notes 5.0: Mail Features focuses on mail. Students can enroll in either Notes 5.0: Mail Features or Notes 5.0: Database Features as their introductory Notes 5.0 course. One class does not build on the other. Students who want to learn advanced features can take Notes 5.0: Advanced.

Performance-Based Objectives

Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the basic concepts of Notes and get started working with Notes.
  • Use different types of Notes databases and be able to create, save, and close both main-topic and response database documents that contain a variety of field types.
  • Create documents that take advantage of editing and formatting features, spell check their documents, create and apply named styles, add tables, and create links, hotspots, and sections.
  • Search for information in database documents by using the Search bar and the Search Builder.
  • Create and use additional database types, including subscriptions, Microsoft Office Library, and Web Navigator databases.
  • Use Notes efficiently from a remote location by replicating and protecting database information.

Hardware/software Requirements

An IBM-compatible PC with an 486 processor or higher, and 150 megabytes (MB) of shared disk space; a local area network (LAN) adapter that works with any network operating system that supports Notes; a minimum of 16 MB of Random Access Memory (RAM); a VGA or SVGA video monitor; and a Windows-compatible mouse. Printers are not required, although you will need an installed printer driver.
