Overview
Students will probably get the most out of this course if they want to learn the basic skills necessary to begin using Word 97.
Students enrolling in this course should understand the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer (PC). For example, students should be familiar with terms such as computer memory, data files, and program files. Students should also be familiar with the components that make up the PC, including input, output, and storage devices.
No prior knowledge of Word is assumed.

Performance-Based Objectives
The primary objective is to teach the basic skills necessary to use the Word 97 program.
- Understand the basic concepts of word processing in Word 97.
- Open and edit a document.
- Navigate through a multiple-page document.
- Select, copy, and move text in a document.
- Change the appearance of text by using character and paragraph formatting.
- Work with tab stops and tables in a document.
- Change the overall appearance of a document by working with headers and footers,
margins, and page breaks.
- Proof a document for potential errors by using Word’s proofing tools.

You will need
- 8 megabytes (MB) of Random Access Memory (RAM)
- 55 MB of available hard-disk space to install Word and to copy data files
- An IBM-compatible PC with an 80486SX or higher processor
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Office 97
- A VGA or higher display adapter (The EGA display adapter is not supported.)
- A two-button mouse or IntelliMouse
- A floppy-disk drive
- Printers are not required although you will need an installed printer driver.
- This course was developed using the Microsoft Office version of Word 97. If
you use the standalone version of Word 97, you might notice differences. This book was
written using the Windows 95 platform; however, the manufacturer’s documentation states
that it can also be used with Windows NT.
