Getting Started With Word 2000

Students will learn the basic skills necessary to begin using Word 2000

Prerequisites

To ensure students' success with this course, we recommend that they first take the following Element K Content courses or have equivalent knowledge:
  • Windows 95 : Introduction
  • Windows 98 : Introduction
  • Windows NT 4.0 : Introduction
Target Student
Students enrolling in this course should understand the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer (PC). No prior knowledge of Word is assumed.

What's Next
Getting Started with Word 2000 is the pared-down version of the first course in the Word 2000 series. Word 2000: Level 1, the first full day course in this series, teaches students more about how to use basic skills in Word 2000. Word 2000: Level 2, the next course in this series, teaches students how to use intermediate features of Word 2000. Students who want to learn advanced features can take Word 2000: Advanced .

Performance-Based Objectives
Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Identify the components of the application window and adjust some default settings; create, save, and close a document; open an existing document; and use simple editing techniques.
  • Navigate in a large document by using the mouse and keyboard and locate specific places and words in a document by using the Find, Replace, and Go To commands.
  • Edit a document by using more sophisticated techniques, including moving and copying text within a document and between documents.
  • Apply and remove character and paragraph formatting.
  • Use tabs and create a table.
  • Adjust margins, and add and delete page breaks.
  • Use Word's spelling checker, and print a document.
  • Save an existing document as a Web page, and preview it in a browser.

Hardware Requirements/software required to run this course


You will need:

  • An 486-compatible or faster PC that meets minimum hardware requirements for Windows 95
  • Or later Windows NT 4.0
  • Or later (Pentium 90 with 32 MB or better is recommended.)
  • 500 MB of free hard-disk space (Windows NT only: at least 4 MB of available space in the registry);
  • Either a local CD-ROM drive or access to a network CD-ROM drive
  • A floppy disk drive
  • A VGA or higher display adapter (the EFA display adapter is not supported)
  • And a two-button mouse or IntelliMouse
  • Printers are not required; however, each PC must have an installed printer drive to use Print Preview.
  • Microsoft Windows 95 or later, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later installed.
  • A full installation of Microsoft Office 2000 premium Edition.
  • This course has been developed using the Windows 98 platform. See your reference manual for hardware considerations that apply to your specific hardware setup.
