InDesign 1.5: Basic Skills (Windows)

Adobe Training Overview

Students will learn to use InDesign to create multiple page documents containing both text and graphics.

Basic knowledge of the Windows operating system

Instructor-led, group-paced, classroom-delivery learning model with structured hands-on activities.

Benefits

Students will learn how to create customized documents from scratch. Students will create a multi-page brochure, import and format text and graphics, and create the document's layout.

Target Student

This course is designed for students who have little or no experience using Adobe InDesign, but who have a basic understanding of how to use their computer's operating system to launch and work with programs in order to create documents.

Hardware/Software Requirements

You will need

  • Intel® Pentium® II or faster processor (300 MHz or higher recommended).
  • Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation with Service Pack 4.
  • A hard disk with at least 75 MB of available hard disk space to install the InDesign 1.5 software, and an additional 5 MB of free hard disk space for the course data files.
  • At least 48 MB of random-access memory (RAM). For best performance, 64 MB or more RAM is recommended.
  • A CD-ROM drive.
  • Video card that supports 256-color at 800x600 monitor resolution (high resolution 24-bit or greater Super VGA video display card recommended).
  • Adobe InDesign.
See your reference manual for hardware considerations that apply to your specific hardware setup.

In addition, you will need printers if you want to print the images created in the course
Performance-Based Objectives

Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Navigate in the InDesign environment.
  • Create and modify text and picture frames.
  • Import text and images from other applications.
  • Specify colors for text, lines, and frames.
  • Format text using fonts, sizes, type styles, and leading.
  • Use alignments, tabs, and indents to align text.
  • Use master pages and guides to design a document?s layout and to add page numbering.
  • Create multiple-column documents.
  • Flow several independent stories throughout a document.
  • Wrap text around images.
What"s Next

Adobe InDesign 1.5 Basic Skills 1 is the first course in this series, and is followed by a second course, Adobe InDesign 1.5 Basic Skills 2. After taking the first two courses, students who want to explore more advanced topics can then take either of the following classes, or both of them; Adobe InDesign 1.5 Type Design, and Adobe InDesign 1.5 Print Production.
